Imagine for a moment, if you will, that you received the following series of email messages:

I found your website when I was searching on Google for some info. I wasn't looking to buy your product or service, just some info. But somehow or another, i landed on your site, and now, here i am.
I see that you guys sell some sort of product. I could tell you that I'm interested.. but the truth is, I'm not. I actually could care less about it.
Don't get me wrong, I'm sure there are people out there somewhere who WANT or NEED your product or service. I'm sure those people care about it. I'm just not one of them.
... not right NOW anyways.
I do, however, notice that you have some interesting information here on your site. Now this, I DO need... this I AM interested in. This information answered one of my questions I had, which led me to your site in the first place.
Thanks for this.
(I actually liked this information so much, that i bookmarked your site)

Well, Here I am on your site again. It's been a few months, I know. But I'm back. How did I end up on your site again? Well, this morning, I had another question about something related to this subject, and I remembered that you answered my question before, so I went to my bookmarks, and there you were!
I noticed you've added a lot of new information to your site since the last time I've been here. In fact, it looks like you're adding new stuff practically every day. Maybe I need to stop by more often!
Anyways, once again, I was able to find some good info here, so thanks again.
(As I mentioned before, I personally don't need your product, but if I know of anyone who does, I'll tell them about you.)
Oh, and this time, I subscribed to your weekly newsletter.

I got your newsletter again this week and it reminded me about you guys - so here i am again on your site. The more I read, the more interested I've become in this topic.
This time, I commented on your latest blog post, and got into a debate with a few other people in your community there. I've been reading your company blog and I feel like I'm getting to know you and your team over there. Seems like a good group of people ya got over there.
I noticed you were updating your blog with some interesting stuff, so I subscribed to your RSS feed.

Well, today, the darnedest thing happened. I won't bother you with the details, but suffice it to say that now, all of a sudden, I have a need for product just like yours!... and since I now NEED your product, I am now one of those people who do care about it and want to hear about all the features and benefits.
and, of course, since your site has helped answer so many of my questions over the past few months, you were the first place I thought of.

LESSON: SEO content marketing is all about creating helpful, compelling content that people can easily find in search engines and social media sites.
It's important to remember that most people are not searching for your company or your product. They're searching for information.
When these people land on your site, make sure you provide the content they're searching for. Then, make it easy for them to follow you on the web, so they're reminded of you often. The more free information you give them, the more trust you build, and the more likely it becomes that - when they DO need your product or service in the future - they'll think of you first!
