SEO Optimization - How Much is Too Much?

Remember the early days, when SEO optimization was all the buzz?

Because webmasters thought that the more they mentioned a phrase, the more likely the site would get to the top of the mystical Google search, many of them went overboard when they were doing their SEO duties.

That meant you got sites that actually had descriptions that read like the ramblings of an obsessed person. You know the ones. "I like Coach purses. Coach purses are really nice. Coach purses have a lot of style. Where do you buy your Coach purses? My favorite Coach purses are purple. This site is for people who like Coach purses."

Gee, do you think they might have been trying to get to the top of the Coach purses search results?

There are still so many people who believe the more they repeat the phrase in question, the more effective their SEO optimization efforts will be.

They couldn't be further from the truth. That's because while repeating the keywords aids in SEO, that's not all there is to making your efforts work.

That's because it's not all about the keywords. Google results also reflect a site's relevance and usefulness. That means that while you may have attracted some attention by repeating the keywords, people aren't going to make a return visit if your landing page is full of useless gibberish.

When it comes to search engine optimization, there really can be too much of a good thing.

Let's face it, if nobody wants to stay and use your website, or if they find your obsessive repetitions to be boring and useless, are your SEO efforts really working?

And if, eventually, nobody is looking at your website, it will lose money and visitors. Eventually it will be part of that Internet wasteland where websites go to die.

Keeping your website and your SEO optimization efforts under control will go a long way toward attracting the repeat visitors that it needs to survive.
