SEO Copy - Does it Have to Repeat and Repeat?

"One fish, two fish, red fish, blue fish..."
At one time, I had that Dr. Seuss book memorized. That's because my sons loved it so much, we read it every night at least three times before bedtime.
And of course, after the repeated readings, they had it memorized as well - but
they still loved it.
It's cute when little children love to have their favorite stories repeated again and again. But it's not so cute when it comes to your website or blog. It's just annoying.
However, when some people are working on their sites' SEO copy, they think that repeating their keywords is the best way to get people to remember and love to visit.
But just like the repeated readings of "One fish, two fish" gets annoying to anyone over the age of, say four, repeating your SEO copy keywords over and over again gets annoying to anyone visiting a website.
What's more, if your site repeats those until people are sick of them, those visitors are going to think they stumbled onto spam and move on.
And before long, your site has become just one more of the millions of sites out there that nobody ever visits.
So how do you keep this from happening?
Remember this: Successful SEO efforts don't depend just on repeating your keywords over and over again. Great SEO copy attracts readers by being engaging, well-written and topical, not by bludgeoning visitors with one or two of the same keywords.
The next time you write something, give it a quick readthrough and see how many times your keywords repeat. If it's more than 3 or 4 times for every 300 words or so, then they are too repetitive.
This doesn't mean that keywords should be eliminated altogether. A few keywords sprinkled throughout your writing really does make make your site show up in searches, and you do need them.
But when you start repeating them over and over, tell yourself this: "There was only one Dr. Seuss. And I'm not him."
