Are You Wordy? Twitter Can Help!

As a writer, there's nothing I love more than a beautifully crafted piece of text.  Why do I adore Jane Austen?  Because she says so much so well in so few words.  Each sentence is like a little piece of candy- very rich and sweet and delicious.  Yum.

When you read such delicious content, you will immediately be drawn to it.  You will recognize it as superior to most of what you see out there.  How do some people do it?  How do they know what to say and how to say it concisely?  Well, unfortunately there is no magic formula.  But there are some things you can do to get better at it.

A read a blog a while back that made some good points about the value of social media in improving writing skills.  Did you know that Twitter only allows 140 characters?  Of course you did!  You long ago learned to keep your thoughts down to 140 characters.  Did this annoy you at first?  Well, be grateful to Twitter.  It prevented you from rambling.

The point is, when you have limited space, you are forced to pare things down.  Let's face it- if you had that huge closet you always wanted, you'd just fill it with more junk.  Pretty soon no closet in the universe would be big enough.  You know I'm right.  Think of your writing the same way.  Pare it down.

Since Twitter doesn't give you a lot of space, consider maximizing each word.  Make each phrase more descriptive.  It can be done.  So do it.  There.
